INDUSTRIES

MIDIOR works with companies that leverage technology and data as the foundation for their products and services. We specialize in complex products or services with “fuzzy edges,” where the underlying technology may be hidden from the consumer and it is hard to determine where the product starts and stops - online banking or electronic backup, as examples.

MIDIOR's roots are in the high technology and communications industries, but early on our focus expanded to include the industrial products and financial services sectors. Financial services firms are typically enormous consumers of technology, their services are highly dependent on technology and the "material" work product is often data. Increasingly, industrial products firms are embedding technology and software into the delivery of their products, creating the need for a product development & management discipline more in line with that of high tech companies. MIDIOR also works with non-profit organizations helping them improve their use of technology to support their human services or educational offerings.

While MIDIOR clients range in size, they all share a desire to improve their return on every dollar invested in their products, services or technology, whether the investment is part of their Information Technology (IT) organization or their Research & Development (R&D) initiatives.

Across all of the industries MIDIOR serves, we see three capabilities that distinguish successful organizations from those that are left behind:

  • An essential differentiator of successful firms is their ability to scale back resources allocated to a product as quickly as they scale up. This requires a culture and management focus that is always ready to move on to the next most important thing to do. MIDIOR's platform rationalization and portfolio management services address this area.
  • Another key driver is the priority given to reducing cost and increasing quality, two factors which we believe are not mutually exclusive. Every product can be simplified, even in non-obvious ways. Making a product easier to sell and maintain can be much more rewarding than developing another unneeded feature. MIDIOR's management models for product development enforce this perspective which we call "the business of the product."
  • And perhaps the most important characteristic of successful and innovative companies is the ability to leverage passionate individuals and knowledgeable teams. This capability relies on a culture that values people over process, where management serves as an accelerator for product teams, not a roadblock. MIDIOR works directly with product and project teams to help them overcome obstacles and develop skills to become more effective and productive.

MIDIOR helps client organizations master and internalize these three capabilities. The end result is optimization of development resources, more accurate development plans and ultimately, more successful products tailored to the needs of their specific industries.
